About Sunderland


Now known as the city by the sea, Sunderland, once a great industrial powerhouse, has undergone the greatest transformation in its history. Set right by the mouth of the river Wear, the riversides have been revitalised. The city centre has been regenerated and Sunderland is now a city with a difference - a modern, bustling centre, with a relaxing green environment and stunning coastal scenery, and all surrounded by easily accessible countryside. Add to all of this a range of outstanding heritage, cultural and sporting attractions and you'll find that Sunderland is an attractive proposition for a visit.

 

 

The award winning Victorian Mowbray Park is located adjacent to the Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery and the fabulous Winter Gardens. Other great cultural attractions include the National Glass Centre and St. Peter’s Church Monkwearmouth, Shopping facilities are abundant in the City centre at the Bridges Shopping Centre. Just outside of the City is the historic Washington Old Hall, the ancestral home of the family of George Washington, 1st President of The United States of America.
