Now known as the city by the sea, Sunderland, once a great industrial powerhouse, has undergone the greatest transformation in its history. The award-winning Victorian Mowbray Park is located adjacent to the Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery, famous for its LS Lowry collection, and the fabulous Winter Gardens. Other great cultural attractions include the National Glass Centre, St. Peter’s Church Monkwearmouth and St Andrews in Roker is known as the Cathedral of the Arts and Crafts movement. Shopping facilities are abundant in the City centre at the Bridges Shopping Centre. Just outside of the City is the historic Washington Old Hall, the ancestral home of the family of George Washington, 1st President of The United States of America.
