North East England’s four areas; Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Tees Valley plus the County of Cumbria were once part of the ancient Kingdom of Northumbria.
They have proud castles, glorious coastlines, unspoilt countryside, an amazing spirit of history and a buzzing modern life. There are areas untouched and uncongested landscapes.
The North East has its own wildly spectacular Northumberland National Park, areas of outstanding natural beauty, a heritage coastline and also two World Heritage sites in Hadrian’s Wall and Durham Cathedral and Castle. The Regions capital is Newcastle upon Tyne.
The County of Cumbria, with its English Lake District World Heritage Site including its own National Park, inspired Poets, Artists and Writers such as, William Wordsworth, John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter. Cumbria also shares the World Heritage site of Hadrian’s Wall. The City of Carlisle is the County Capital.
