From the 14th to the 17th Century, the border areas between England and Scotland were turbulent and lawless places and neither Country’s laws were respected. To the North of Carlisle in particular, the line of the border was not clearly defined and parts of the area became known as “The Debatable Lands”.

SOME BACKGROUND AND OUTLINE INFO ON HADRIAN’S WALL Britain had seen Roman invasion and occupation since AD43 and even briefly before that in the time of Julius Caesar. However, things changed from the time of Emperor Hadrian.
HOW TO BE INVOLVED: Plans are underway to celebrate 1900 years of Hadrian’s Wall throughout 2022 with the Hadrian’s Wall 1900 Festival. It is scheduled to take place between 24th January 2022, which is Emperor Hadrian’s birthday, until the time of the Roman Festival of Saturnalia, 17-23 December 2022.
